How To Keep Your Instagram Account Safe

Instagram, with over 500 million daily active users globally, is one of the most popular social media apps. Instagram users are also vulnerable to phishing attacks from individuals who send malicious links claiming to be from the organization via DMs. This leads to the lack of access to their accounts by Instagram users.

Instagram has security measures already in place that help to keep accounts secure. Some protection measures must also be followed by users to be aware of any suspicious behavior. Here are some guidelines you should follow if you’re an avid Instagram user to keep your account safe from phishing attacks.

How To Keep Your Instagram Account Safe

Two-Factor Authentication

For any online service that we use for personal and professional purposes, this security feature is recommended. Two-factor authentication provides an additional layer of protection to your account, as after entering the password, it needs one more check. You may obtain codes from your registered mobile number through SMS or from other applications, such as Duo Mobile or Google Authenticator.

Third-Party Apps

For Instagram, there are quite a bunch of third-party applications available. This can be for saving your phone with Instagram Posts, testing who followed you, grid builders, and more. These third-party apps can require access to your profile, leading to the disclosure of your login information. Revoking access to such third-party applications is advisable.

Phishing DM

Users of Instagram are often sent messages via DMs pretending to be official company contact. Note that Instagram never communicates through DMs, and email is used to communicate officially. By going to Settings > Protection > Instagram emails, you can also confirm this.

Monitor Login Activity

By going to Settings > Login Operation on the desktop, you should look out for hackers. This page will show you a list of the locations where your account has been logged in. You can check your present position and look at past activities. It’s a good idea to log out of those computers and change your password if there are places that you do not remember.

Keep Your Account  As Private

Anyone on the platform can see your photos and videos by default when you upload to Instagram. Set your account to private via Settings > Privacy > Account Privacy and switch to Private Account, if you only want to connect with people you actually know.
